Shine RESPOND family violence response training includes a range of specialist training options. Our knowledge and experience that comes from 30 years of working with people experiencing family violence, and nearly as long working with people using family violence, are the foundation for our training programmes.  Our training is sector-leading, innovative and contemporary; and delivered in an engaging, interactive and practical way by highly regarded professional facilitators.

Participants can enter at Level 1 Introductory Training and progress to Level 3 Advanced Training and Specialist Topic Days. Those with existing experience and knowledge can select the level at which they enter the training programme.

Community Professionals Training Programme

Shine RESPOND training may meet your needs if:

  • You work, or come into contact with people who may be experiencing family violence.
  • You are a professional or a community worker in social services, justice, health, education, a government agency or NGO.
  • You work in and with the community, ie, for an organisation in the community.

Family Violence General Awareness Session

Entry level training to increase your general awareness of family violence. This session covers the legal definition of family violence in New Zealand, will give you simple responses to use when working with someone experiencing family violence and where/how to safely refer someone experiencing family violence. Sessions organised on demand with your team, group or organisation.

Responding Effectively to People Experiencing Violence

Introductory level training for working and responding appropriately and safely with people experiencing family violence. Understand the complexities and the impact family violence has on families, and the effect on a person’s dignity and wellbeing. Explore entrapment theory, coercive control and resistance, and learn how to use the Recognise/Respond/Refer model.

Practical Skills and Tools to Respond Effectively to People Experiencing Violence

Hone your skills and understanding, and learn how to provide practical support to people experiencing family violence. Understand the complexity of risk, how to make accurate assessments, and client-led and client-centred interventions. Learn how to develop safe strategies to provide support mechanisms to people and expand your understanding of safety, dignity and wellbeing when working with people impacted by family violence.

Understanding Entrapment through Community Specialist Knowledge

Increase your professional abilities and skills with our advanced level interactive training. Build a deeper understanding of the entrapment model of family violence as experts from Shine and specialist guest speakers share their insights into different elements of the model. Structured to enable attendees to build their comprehension and confidence to recognise and mitigate entrapment in ways that uphold dignity and build on safety for people experiencing family violence.

Deep dives into a specialist topic. Learn high-level skills and knowledge based on the latest research and practice presented by subject matter experts.
