Shine Education and Training welcomes the opportunity to continue delivering the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) Family Violence and Sexual Violence (FVSV) Response Training Package for a further two years.
Since 2023, the programme has delivered 903 hours of Foundational training to a total of 1582 participants and 175 hours of Advanced training to 231 participants across Aotearoa. Participants come from across the workforce based in the Court, as well as external stakeholders who support people through the Court process. They represent a range of roles and services, including lawyers, probation and restorative justice services, Court report writers, and specialist family violence and sexual violence services contracted to support people during or following their involvement with the Courts.
This tailored training package supports a shared understanding of the dynamics and impacts of family violence and sexual violence, and how to respond safely to Court participants affected by family violence and sexual violence.
The package was developed by Shine in 2022, in partnership with specialist sexual violence organisations, kaupapa Māori organisations and expert advisors. These partnerships were central to creating an evidence-based, victim-survivor centred training package grounded in the Aotearoa context.
The training is delivered in partnership with regional specialist sexual violence organisations, with every session co-facilitated by a Shine family violence specialist and a sexual violence specialist Trainer. This collaborative approach brings together different areas of expertise and reflects the whakataukī guiding the programme:
“Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou, ka ora ai te iwi
With your basket, and with my basket, the people will prosper.”
The interactive and collaborative training recognises that everyone has a role to play in creating safer and more effective responses to family violence and sexual violence. The training package includes:
- Online pre-learning and two one-day, in-person training sessions.
- Foundational Training, which introduces core concepts including entrapment, coercive control and the Recognise, Respond, Refer model.
- Advanced Training, which builds on these foundations, with a focus on response-based practice, recognising and responding to resistance, cultural responsiveness, and working appropriately with people who use violence.
Evaluations consistently show that the participants find the training highly useful, practical and applicable to their roles with 100% of people indicating that the learning goals were achieved.
