Art collectors will have a rare opportunity to acquire work by one of New Zealand’s leading glass artists while helping Shine continue its vital family violence services.
Black Door Gallery in Parnell will present Made to Shine, a special exhibition of glass by acclaimed New Zealand artist Garry Nash, from 6 to 19 October 2026. The exhibition launches with a public opening at the gallery on Tuesday 6 October, from 5.30pm to 7pm.
Sixty per cent of the proceeds from sales will be donated to Shine, giving New Zealanders an opportunity to support women and children affected by family violence while adding an important work of New Zealand studio glass to their collections. The works come from a private collection and will be available through Black Door Gallery and online for the duration of the exhibition.
Presbyterian Support Northern General Manager Fundraising, Marketing and Social Enterprise Lisa Rudolphe says the exhibition is a wonderful example of generosity and creativity coming together for a powerful purpose.
“Made to Shine is a great idea because it gives people the opportunity to acquire an exceptional piece of New Zealand glass art while also helping adults and children affected by family violence.
“We are deeply grateful to the people whose generosity has made this exhibition possible, and to Black Door Gallery for bringing the collection to the public. It shows how New Zealanders can use what they have, whether that is art, time, expertise or a financial gift, to help make someone else safer.
“Donations give Shine greater ability to respond to the real and often urgent needs of people experiencing family violence. That support can help provide essentials, safety planning, advocacy and other practical assistance as people take steps towards a safer future.”
People leaving the person abusing them can face significant practical and financial barriers, including securing safe housing, obtaining legal protection and meeting immediate needs such as food, clothing, transport and healthcare. Shine relies on generous donors to help provide practical support and dignity to clients dealing with complex trauma.
“This exhibition reflects the generosity for which New Zealanders are known,” says Lisa Rudolphe.
“Every purchase will help Shine continue working alongside people at an extraordinarily difficult point in their lives. Collectively, these acts of generosity help create safer homes and brighter futures.”
A pioneer of New Zealand studio glass
Garry Nash, ONZM, has been a pioneering figure in New Zealand’s studio glass movement since 1978. Internationally recognised for his art glass, he was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001 for his services to glass art.
The Made to Shine collection includes an extensive variety of vases, bowls and platters in richly coloured and patterned glass. Individual works feature techniques and finishes including crackle effects, etching, medallions and Nash’s distinctive Opalino Chip style.
For collectors, the exhibition is significant because it brings together a substantial group of Garry Nash works from a private collection. It offers an unusual opportunity to view and purchase pieces across a range of forms, sizes, colours and periods of artistic exploration, while directing most of the proceeds to an important New Zealand cause.
